Scythe Course at Sandudden - Nykvarn - Södermanland
At the end of the road south of Nykvarn, on the shores of Yngern, one of southern Sweden’s cleanest lakes, lies the old garden center Sandudden. The peninsula’s glacial deposits host protected calcareous forest biotopes, where the ground is covered with bluebells and lime-loving ground fungi. On the neighboring farm, sheep, goats, and cattle graze, keeping the old pastures open.
At Sandudden, we are welcomed by our host Johan, who lives on the farm and takes care of the land. Until a few years ago, the farm's large meadow had become increasingly overgrown with lupines and shrubs, but it has since been gradually restored to recreate a traditional meadow. A crucial part of the restoration work has been sowing REAL meadow seeds, something we will learn more about during the course.
In the surrounding natural forest around the farm, wild bees have plenty of building material, and butterflies have already started to return to the now flourishing field. A rewarding effort!
After the day’s scything work, a wood-fired sauna and a swim in the cool, clear waters of Yngern are promised.
When? 09:30 - 17:00

For whom? Anyone who wants to learn to mow with a scythe or continue developing their skills. No prior knowledge is required. Children can also participate in the course.
Our goal is for you to return home full of inspiration to manage meadows, with well-adjusted scythe equipment that suits you! You will master the basics of mowing, peening, and sharpening.
During the scythe course, we will practice peening, mowing techniques, and sharpening with the practical peening jig. We will adjust and understand the angles of the scythe blade and learn how to repair stone damage.
For inspiration and the best course experience, we recommend watching our scythe courses on film beforehand. They are also constantly available on YouTube even after the course ends!
Equipment: Buy, borrow, or bring your own? Please fill in the participant(s)’ height in the text field above. You can also let us know if you want to borrow a scythe, already have a good peening scythe, or want to buy one. It’s okay to be unsure! The easiest for us is if you select “buy” if you think that might be the case. You can change your mind about a purchase commitment up to the end of the course. An invoice for any purchased equipment will be sent via email after the course.
We will call you in good time before the course to go over the equipment in detail so everything is fully prepared!
If you would like to familiarize yourself with the available equipment beforehand, please visit our webshop! Everything is collected there. Don’t hesitate to call Janne "Slåttergubben" at 073-832 25 59 if you have any questions!
Bring: Weather-appropriate clothing. Light shoes with a thin sole for the best feel are recommended, but the most important thing is to wear shoes you’re comfortable in. A sturdy belt to hang the scythe from (it doesn’t need to be attached to your pants). Feel free to wear pants, shorts, or a skirt that allows you to move easily and comfortably.
Food: Vegetarian lunch and afternoon fika are included in the course.
