2-Day Course on a True Meadow. Cooking Over Fire. Course Leader Jan Wester
Scythe course in Misterfall’s ash meadow - Kisa - Östergötland
This is my best scythe course. We have plenty of time to get to know each other, and we work in a quiet, historic, and richly blooming meadow environment that I love. We begin by mowing the most nutrient-rich areas, here we work in a real meadow with plenty of stones and various types of grasses to tackle! The pace is a bit slower, and on Saturday we cover all the same steps as in a one-day course. We also fit in a flower walk, cook food over an open fire, and enjoy the wilderness. On Sunday, we continue mowing and peening, and you will receive a lot of personal feedback. We’ll then rake and stack the grass we’ve mowed.
When? 09:30 Saturday - 16:00 Sunday (you can leave earlier if needed)
Course Leader: Jan Wester
For whom? Anyone who wants to learn to mow with a scythe or continue developing their skills; no prior knowledge is required. Children can also participate in the course.
Our goal is for you to return home full of inspiration for meadow management, with well-adjusted scythe equipment that suits you! You will master the basics of mowing, peening, and sharpening.
To save time for everyone, we need to be prepared:
Thank you for filling in the following information in the text field above:
During the scythe course, we will practice peening, mowing techniques, and sharpening with the practical peening jig. We will adjust and understand the angles of the scythe blade. We will also learn to repair stone damage.
For inspiration and the best course experience, we recommend watching our scythe courses on film beforehand. They are always available on YouTube, even after the course ends!
Equipment: Buy, borrow, or bring your own? Please fill in the participant(s) height in the text field above. You can also tell us if you want to buy, borrow, or already have a peening scythe. It’s okay to be unsure! The easiest for us is if you choose “buy” if you think it might happen. You can change your mind about a purchase commitment up to the course’s end. An invoice for any purchased equipment will be sent by email after the course ends.
We will call you in good time before the course to go over the equipment details so everything is thoroughly prepared!
If you would like to familiarize yourself with the equipment available beforehand, please visit our webshop! Everything is collected there. Don’t hesitate to call Janne "Slåttergubben" at 073-832 25 59 if you have any questions!
Bring: Weather-appropriate clothing. Light shoes with a thin sole for the best feel are recommended, but the most important thing is that you wear shoes you’re comfortable in. A sturdy belt to hang the scythe from (it doesn’t need to be attached to your pants). Feel free to wear pants, shorts, or a skirt that allows you to move easily and comfortably. Bring water (preferably plenty if coming by car), a plate, cutlery, and a cup. You may also want to bring something nice to drink and light snacks to enjoy by the fire in the evening. Mosquito- and midge-proof clothing for the evening, a scarf, a hat, covering clothes, and woolen socks in slippers – some evenings the midges can be annoying here, but usually, it’s not a major issue.
Food: Included – organic and partly homegrown. I will bring everything that’s needed. We will arrange food so it’s easy to eat vegan and gluten-free. Please inform us of any allergies! Note that we all need to share the responsibility for cooking and dishwashing. There are benches to sit on, and a shed with a fireplace and plenty of space if the weather is bad.
Accommodation: Tent/camper on the meadow, or Föllingen hotel, located a couple of km away. There are also hotels in Kisa. I will likely already be at the meadow on Friday evening and stay in a tent until Sunday, so it’s fine to come on Friday as well.
Toilet: There is an outhouse (which can sometimes be full, and then it’s nicer to go out into the forest). I bring water in a canister and soap.
