Östgöta-grown and high in fat content. During the harsh winter of 2010-11, a few bird watchers discovered a 50-hectare unharvested rapeseed field in Storvreta, Uppland. The flock of birds there included up to 1,000 goldfinches and 800 redpolls, along with twite, bullfinch, and others. (See the image!) In autumn, stubble fields from rapeseed often attract linnet, brambling, chaffinch, and greenfinch. There is no doubt that rapeseed is an extremely potent birdseed! It's nice that there is a Swedish-grown, fatty seed available at a reasonable price! But...
Despite the popularity of rapeseed in the fields, it is usually challenging to get birds to eat it at bird feeders. This is likely because it is outcompeted by sunflower and hemp seeds, which are apparently a bit tastier. Another reason might be that birds are simply not accustomed to rapeseed at feeders, and it is rarely provided in abundance. Feel free to try it out and report back to us on how it went!
The easiest way to get birds to try new food is to place a pile on the ground, or on a board, stump, rock, etc., or mix it with other seeds. Setting up a new feeder with rapeseed next to a well-visited one with hemp and sunflower seeds is doomed to fail.
Rapeseed never clumps and is suitable to mix with, for example, shelled sunflower seeds.
Birds that have proven to like rapeseed at some feeders include: redpoll, snow bunting, twite, greenfinch, brambling, blackbird, goldfinch, bullfinch, and tits.
Eating rapeseed yourself?
Organic rapeseed is also good for us to eat and is very nutritious. However, our rapeseed is uncleaned, so you have to tolerate some weed seeds!
If you want to grow rapeseed, it should be sown in late August as this is winter rapeseed. The plants will emerge and overwinter – then come spring, they bloom quickly – and these flower stalks can be pruned for a few weeks in May for a delicate young broccoli!
Our rapeseed comes from farms in Östergötland.
Our rapeseed seeds cause a transport emission equivalent to 0.3 kWh/kilo (0.08kg CO2 eq./kilo) from cultivation to our warehouse.

Clearly shows that many species actually like rapeseed when it does not compete with other fatty seeds.
