The starling is one of the few birds that suffer when agriculture becomes larger-scale and more specialized.
Like all other birds, starlings need a large supply of insects nearby when raising their young. Long flights and a lack of insects result in starvation for many chicks. So, you can also attract starlings when you work in and plan your garden.
Starlings always search for food on the ground. They cannot forage in tall grass, meadows, or dense fields. The classic habitat for them is a short-grazed pasture, which was common on farms in the past. They can also search for food on mowed or cut areas, paths, and along road edges, as well as on sparsely vegetated land.
Lawns are good for starlings to forage on, but to ensure a good supply of insects, it’s beneficial if they are part of a mosaic of different surfaces that create diversity in the garden.
