Organic Bird Food

At Slåttergubben, we are truly passionate about birds. That's why you will only find organic bird food with us.

By choosing to feed with organic bird food, you contribute to more insects, more weed seeds, and of course, fewer toxins in the fields where the bird food is grown. In this way, you also benefit the birds (and other species) that live there during the summer.

Most of our resident birds manage the winter well on their own, even if we don't feed them. But there are a few birds, like the yellowhammer, that actually have a harder time. They no longer find many small-scale farms, where there used to be plenty of seeds to eat in the farmyard.

And bird feeding is a very enjoyable activity! Many of us like to offer our feathered friends treats when the first snow has fallen and watch them sit and eat outside the window. We want to support this by providing the absolute best food for all birds – both those sitting outside the window in winter and those living out in the fields.

Help the birds too and choose organic!

Our Organic Seed Mixes

A simple solution for those who want to feed birds with the best possible bird food is to choose one of our own seed mixes. Contains 100% organic ingredients.

Villa Bas

Villa Bas is a versatile birdseed mix with grain-based field seeds, chopped sunflower seeds, and hemp seeds. It is suitable for those who live in a house, townhouse, or apartment and want to attract birds such as the greenfinch, house sparrow, bullfinch, and siskin. It fits all bird feeders, but if you want to favor the yellowhammer, spread generously on the ground!

Fröblandningar

Villa Plus

Villa Plus is a luxurious and almost completely shell-free blend of fatty seeds that birds love! Sunflower kernels, hemp seeds, and peanuts attract birds like the greenfinch, hawfinch, bullfinch, and goldfinch. It is well-suited for densely populated areas where litter-free bird food is important.

Lantliv

Lantliv "Country Life" consists of grain-based field seeds, chopped sunflower seeds, rapeseeds, and uncleaned hemp seeds with small seeds from wild field plants such as fat hen. This mixture is perfect for ground feeding, preferably spread out on larger cleared areas that you can vary as you wish. Spreading bird food on the ground creates a color contrast against the snow, attracting passing birds—especially the yellowhammer!

Swedish Organic Suet

Organic Swedish suet from cows that have grazed on natural pastures is the most beneficial for the birds. However, we can only sell it to you...

...once you have a registration number from the Swedish Board of Agriculture. The reason for this is to enable quicker tracing of diseases. It’s free, easy, and entertaining to arrange!

Suet is the most nutritious and best food for all tits and woodpeckers. As the cows graze on Swedish natural pastures, we also contribute to creating an environment with an abundance of flowers and insects, which is so important for all those birds we don’t see at the bird feeder. Curlews, cuckoos, wheatears, merlins, honey buzzards, swifts, house and barn swallows, and red-backed shrikes are just a few of the birds that also deserve our attention and money. Birds that we never see at a classic bird feeder.

Organic shelled Sunflower Seeds

Sunflower seeds are irresistible to almost all birds!

When it comes to choosing sunflower seeds with or without shells, opinions are divided, or more accurately, there are some misconceptions. You can read more about that here. Our reasoning, as usual, is based on what is best for the birds and the environment. Ideally, no sunflower seeds would be imported at all, but if we are going to do it, we choose hulled sunflower kernels.

Our sunflower kernels are grown in Bulgaria. There, the shells are left behind and used as biofuel, instead of littering our Swedish gardens. It requires half as much packaging and takes up half the space for transport and storage. Moreover, it's easier for you, as you don't have to refill the bird feeder as often, and easier for birds that aren’t so good at shelling, such as the long-tailed tit, treecreeper, blackcap, and robin, to name a few.

Organic shelled Sunflower Seeds - whole kernel

Whole sunflower seeds are slightly better than chopped ones, as they have a somewhat longer shelf life and flow more easily into narrow bird feeders.

Organic Shelled Sunflower Seeds, Chopped

Chopped sunflower seeds may clump together slightly in humid weather or if left too long in the feeder. At the same time, they are cheaper, produce less waste, and can be eaten by birds with weaker beaks.

Organic Field Seeds

Our field seeds are by-products from organic cultivation of grains and hemp. They contain both whole kernels and weed seeds from fat hen, shepherd's purse, and field pennycress – excellent food for birds!

Field seeds are enjoyed by yellowhammers (which only eat on the ground), house sparrows, tree sparrows, pigeons, and many more. Picky birds like tits, blackbirds, and robins prefer fattier seeds if offered, but will also partake of field seeds if that's all that's available.

Spread generously on the ground (shoveled area or packed snow) and feel free to mix the different types for a complete bird feeding!

Field Seeds from Lunden's Farm

Grain screenings from Lunden's Farm in Västergötland. Suitable for both bird feeders and on the ground. A reliable choice for the yellowhammer!

Small Field Seeds

A rare product that took us 10 years to find—but it was worth it! This is what our Swedish resident birds have eaten for all time around small-scale farms and out in the fields. Even exclusive species such as the Horned Lark, Snow Bunting, and Little Bunting can be attracted by these delicacies. The small seeds may easily slip through a bird feeder but are perfect for ground feeding! From organic farming in Latvia.

Field Seeds from Hemp Residue

A very exciting mix with a large proportion of hulled hemp seeds, rich in fat and protein, and attractive weed seeds. From organic hemp cultivation in Latvia.
